The idea of colour balancing our photographs is to make the colours look right. In most cases, we want white to actually look white and for grey to look grey.
For the most part, if we can get an image to display white as white, and grey as grey, then the rest of the colours will be corrected and look normal and pleasing to us.
To help us achieve this, we use an 18% White Balance Grey Card.
